How Naiema realized the importance of domes...
You know it's pathetic when you start checking your own blog for updates; that's what I've been doing these past few weeks, among other things.
Last week Alina, Daniah, my dad and I drove around "downtown" Lahore. We went to the Badshahi Mosque. Shah Jahan, the emperor who built the Taj Mahal, built this mosque as well. It looks similar to the Taj, and it's beautiful! However, the unfortunate thing is that Pakistanis don't understand the meaning of 'preserving.' The masjid's ceiling is cracking and the tiles are falling off. Yet, the Mosque still manages to retain it's ancient beauty. It's also surprisingly small - compared to how it looks from the outside. There is a huge dome in the center, creating a giant arch inside the masjid ceiling. There are two other arches on each side of the main dome, and this creates a built in speaker system that amplifies the voice of the Imam which passes through the curves of the ceiling. Pretty awesome. This is pretty sad, but I just figured out why mosques were built with domes - to intensify the sound! Well, I try to post up a picture of the mosque so ya’ll can see it.
